This model is
One of One. Let me tell you the story of this model. Originally, this model was built in 1963 by TOBY in Japan. It was imported by PFM as a pretty normal O-5b with an oil tender, enclosed cab, mars lights, and a Worthington Feedwater heater. This was a CROWN model.

In 1976, that regular O-5b was modified by Don Wirth to as you see it today. He changed a lot of things! Starting with the tender, he got rid of the oil bunker and added a coal bunker with a full coal load. The closed cab was replaced with a proper open cab as appropriate for the O-5's. The worthington feedwater heater was removed and replaced with an elesco feedwater heater with all associated features. The front pilot trucks were swapped for spoked wheels. Finally, an absolutely spotless paint job was applied. Talking with Don, I learned paint jobs like this can no longer be done due to the availability of old school paint.
Finally, when Tom Marsh of Overland Imports decided to bring in the O-5, which in the early 80's had still not been done by any importers, this model became the pilot model for the project.
It's quite the story for this venerable 4-8-4. Now is your chance to own what truly is a crown jewel! There is only one like it in the world.

Included with the purchase is a certificate of authenticity signed by Tom Marsh at the 2016 Brass Expo in Chicago. When I first showed this model to the Marsh's in Chicago, they nearly gasped. This model is EXTREMELY  Special.
Other provenance includes the box made for this model. The label reads, "Birthmark Models. If it's a BIRTHMARK --- You're struck with it". Inside the box lid reads this same thing on a handwritten note.
The model operates a bit jerky but I believe with a tuneup it'd run quite nicely... If you choose to run it
Model will be shipped in extra large box. Free shipping on this special piece. It's been the jewel of my collection for years. Now it is time to give it a new happy home.
This model was purchased from a prominent Brass Collector outside of Washington D.C. Before that, I don't believe it changed hands more than once or twice. Unfortunately I cannot speak to when the Marsh family sold it originally. It's quite the good looking locomotive.
